Big Changes for Zoom meetings are happening behind the scenes at UU Cheyenne!

UUCC is doing some behind the scenes work to improve our Zoom capacity! This means a few important changes are here!
  1. Most Zoom meetings have new links and meeting IDs, including Sunday morning worship. These new Zoom meetings also have passwords to help improve our Zoom security. The password is embedded in the click to join link, and it is listed in the invitation for those who need to use it to join by phone. The password will be different for different meetings.
  2. If you need to schedule a meeting on Zoom, please email Tamra at administrator@uucheyenne.org to schedule use of the congregation’s Zoom. As a reminder, Tamra is in the physical office on Wednesdays and Sundays, and also working remotely on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please leave enough time for your meeting to get scheduled.
  3. If you are leading a meeting on Zoom, you will need to get the Host Key from Tamra in order to claim your role as the meeting host. You can go to this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=820HxmviHfA and watch the first minute and a half to see how to use the claim host function on Zoom.
We offer many opportunities for worship and fellowship via Zoom.

A Special UUA President’s Column

A message to white Unitarian Universalists.

SUSAN FREDERICK-GRAY | 6/4/2020

–an excerpt–

“I wanted to write to my sibling white UUs, to share how my attitude towards policing has dramatically changed over the last fifteen years.

As I watch the news unfold this week, I feel heartbroken and angry. I also feel something else—trauma. As I watched the videos of police cars in New York City and Columbus, Ohio, drive into crowds of people, I felt in my body the fear and trauma of what it was like to be on the streets in Charlottesville, Virginia, when the police stood and allowed armed white supremacist, white nationalist, antisemitic, neo-confederates to attack peaceful, faithful counter-protesters who had come to witness against their hatred.

I also notice how my left arm is hurting. The one that Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s deputies tried to break, the one that had scars on it for years from the zip tie handcuffs they used on me when I was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2010.

We must demilitarize and defund the police. We must defund and decarcerate the jails.

These stories I share of witnessing and experiencing police violence are minor compared to the lived experience of many Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color in the United States. Even the violence I experienced in the Maricopa County jail was minor compared to that of the young Latino man arrested with me who was beaten unconscious by sheriff’s deputies. My experience is minor compared to the violence Black Americans have experienced for generations at the hands of police, at the hands of white people, at the hands of slave holders.

My experiences are minor in comparison, and I only experienced them because I chose solidarity with communities of color. That choice taught me a lot about whiteness, about policing, and about the United States.

Listening to and organizing with Black and brown communities in Phoenix, I learned how my neighbors lived under a virtual police state. Their neighborhoods were constantly surveilled by police, and in Southern Arizona, by Border Patrol as well. Police, sometimes in riot gear, would move through neighborhoods and apartment buildings knocking on doors, stopping pedestrians and people in cars and on bikes, asking for documentation. Listening to Black organizers in Cleveland, Ohio, as part of the Issue 1 campaign in 2018, the story was similar. Police surveillance is constant in many communities of color in the United States.

As white people—especially those with class privilege—we are taught that police protect and serve the community. They are seen as “helpers.” We teach our children if they are lost, in danger, or need help, to look for a police officer. And largely, through most of my life, this narrative has matched my experience. However, the killings of Tamir Rice and Aiyana Stanley Jones are devastating examples of why Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color (BIPOC) cannot teach their children this.

Uprisings are occurring across the country because police have never been “helpers” for most Black people in the United States, nor for most Indigenous people and people of color. As with so many experiences of inequity in this country, white supremacy shields white people from harm while teaching us to disbelieve the lived experience of our Black, brown, and Indigenous neighbors.”

UUCC Faith Development News

SUMMER DFD Hours – please know that as your part-time Director of Faith Development, I always have a list of programs, emails, ideas, and events our team wants to take on for our youth/community but can’t due to my limited hours and our limited volunteer bandwidth. My summer schedule began on June 1st.

As of right now, you can reach me most Sunday’s 9am-noon by text, messaging during Sunday service/coffee hour or by emailing me at dfd@uucheyenne.org and Thursday mornings 9am – 1pm. I’m available for appointments outside of these posted hours by contacting me at FDD@uucheyenne.org and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able.

* I will be out of the office the last week of June.

NEW VIRTUAL/Hybrid PROGRAMMING – sUUmmer 2020 @ UUCC  – Creating a UU Sabbath Space at home – NOT JUST FOR KIDS ANYMORE!!!!  ALL ARE WELCOME!!!!
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQg46DN9gBi0hQuNJw2_kNSNMFX54yKhkc23G_tuPkviSd9A/viewform?usp=pp_url

In times of uncertainty and isolation, it’s even more important that we create space in our lives for….  worship, rest, and connection. Right now, it’s tough to feel connected. Luckily, our friends over at Soul Matters have created a program to help UU’s across our country do just that.

UUCC Faith Development team is excited to offer the “Creating Sabbath Space” 6-week program this summer.

This program will walk us through building a home alter in UU and other traditions and share tips on how we might use your home alter in celebrations throughout the year. There’s something for everyone! We’ll share stories of our families experience and pictures of us creating throughout the program.

Program dates are the weeks of July 19th – Aug 23rd. Depending on our group size, we may split into a few smaller groups. Even if you aren’t able to participate with us LIVE, we’d still love for you to join us. There will be information/activity playlist and packets sent out at the beginning of each week, and you are welcome to join along where you are able. We’ll have chances to share on our FD Facebook and our UUCC weekly newsletter.

Do only what you wanna do. No pressure. Come and connect outside of Sunday worship service. We’re going to be as flexible as possible. If you have a specific need, please email Mary Scherden DFD at DFD@uucheyenne.org to answer or help with further questions.

Please fill out this short questioner so we can get to know our group. Attending weekly Live worship isn’t required. We will record our weekly LIVE session for you to access later if needed.

There is no cost to participate in this program. The weekly commitment is as much or as little as you have time for. We hope you’ll come and connect with us this sUUmmer 2020!

While there isn’t a charge associated with this activity, we do have a lot of planning and prep involved as well as a few supplies the FD team will prepare ahead of time. So hurry. Please sign up early and encourage others to do the same. Watch your inbox and newsletter for more announcements.

New UUCC Ministry!
Adopting a Segment of Crow Creek for Cleanup

The Committee on Shared Ministry, along with Mike Shonsey and Kathy Jenkins, have arranged for UUCC to adopt for cleanup the segment of Crow Creek that runs through Martin Luther King Park between 19th St. and Lincolnway and Missile Drive and Dey Ave.  We are looking for a third person to be a contact person and active participant in the project.  If you are that person, please contact Kathy – 630-3324; kathyjenkins7@gmail.com.

The city of Cheyenne requires all of those who participate in the cleanup to sign an Assumption of Risk, Waiver & Release form.  Folks are not allowed to participate unless they sign the form.  Mike and Kathy will bring forms for those who wish to participate to the cleanup location on the scheduled date.  Mike and Kathy will also provide trash bags to all participants.

The next cleanup date is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 at 9:00 a.m.  We will meet in the parking lot off Ames (south of the softball field) Participants are encouraged to wear long pants, long sleeved shirts, suitable shoes (Mike and Kathy wear muck boots, but there is plenty of cleanup that does not involve getting wet) and a sun or ball cap.  Participants should also bring drinking water (it gets hot!).  A tool of some sort, such as a hoe or pitchfork, is helpful for snagging trash in the creek.

Kids under 14 years of age must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
We need volunteers to help care for the lawn. It takes about 45 min – 1 hour to mow, and there is equipment for use in the shed. If you are interested, please contact Mike Kercher at 307-421-4819 or via email at makercher8@gmail.com.  Thanks!

This is an anxious time financially, for individuals and organizations alike. If you are able, UUCC values and appreciates your continued support through this time. If you typically put cash or a check in the offering plate on Sunday mornings, please consider mailing that donation to the church, giving via our website, or giving via our mobile giving app.

If your financial situation changes and you need to adjust an automatic deduction, please email bookkeeper@uucheyenne.org for more information.

If you find yourself in need of emergency financial assistance, please email Rev. Hannah at minister@uucheyenne.org or call/text her at 414-870-1028.
Important! Please Read!

We have been experiencing a growing issue with peanut residue in the building, especially in the library.  Please, do not bring peanut products into the building, and if your little ones enjoy their peanut butter snacks before coming, please be sure their hands are clean before they touch surfaces used by everyone.  We are seeing almost daily allergic reactions, so we ask you to please be diligent. It may be an inconvenience to you, but it can be life-threatening to those who are allergic.

Upcoming Events
