The Past We Cannot Change

This past week our Jewish friends and neighbors have marked Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. But how can we atone when the harm done seems too big, too messy, or too chaotic for any one person or even group of people to claim responsibility? And how can wrestling with that help us understand our nation’s history in new and newly possible ways?

Also, at 9:40 we will gather out front of the church for a masked outdoor hymn sing! Come and sing along with us as we raise our voices (without raising the risk of singing indoors)!

Hymn – #146 Soon the Day Will Arrive

1 Soon the day will arrive when we will be together, and no longer will we live in fear. And the children will smile without wondering whether on that day thunderclouds will appear.

(Chorus) Wait and see, wait and see what a world there can be if we share, if we care, you and me. Wait and see, wait and see what a world there can be if we share, if we care, you and me.

2 Some have dreamed, some have died to make a bright tomorrow, and our vision remains in our hearts. Now the torch must be passed with new hope, not in sorrow, and a promise to make a new start. (Chorus)

Chalice Lighting

Covenant –

Love is the spirit of this church,

And service its cause.

This is our covenant:

To dwell together in peace,

To seek truth,

And to help others.

Sung Response – #1020 Woyaya

We are going, heaven knows where we are going, but we know within. And we will get there, heaven knows how we will get there, but we know we will. It will be hard, we know, and the road will be muddy and rough, but we’ll get there, heaven knows how we will get there, but we know we will.

Woyaya, Woyaya, Woyaya, Woyaya, We are going, heaven knows where we are going, but we know within.
