Earth Day 2011: Sacred Waters

Sunday, April 17, the members of UUCC were introduced to the 40/40 For Earth Challenge.  This is a UU Ministry for Earth project for UU’s across the country in which we will commit to water conservation efforts until Thursday, May 26.  When 40 people in our congregation make 40-day pledges, our church will be included in the roll of participating congregations.  As Unitarian Universalists, we are called to respect the interdependent web of all existence, and water is a common thread.  Water has both life-giving and life-taking properties (think Japan) that have made it an important symbol in many world religious traditions.  Both the UU Service Committee and Ministry for Earth have been involved in several water justice projects, including the Human Right to Water, effects of the BP oil spill, and impacts of fracking on watersheds.

There is a list of40 ideas for water conservation in this issue of the Focus and at Clipboard Corner, or you can come up with your own plan and commit to carrying out your project until May 26.  Children are encouraged to get involved, also.  For more ideas, check out these sites:

(The Story of Stuff is especially good for kids.)

At the end of the period, on Sunday May 29th, we’ll come together to share our stories of actions that will make our world more just.  We need you all, not just 40!  An individual's commitment for 40 days makes a real difference.  Remember, what you do at home can impact the world around you, and the world around you can impact what you do at home!  For more  information call Jan Nimmo or Sandi Gaulke at 638-4554.  It's never too late to join this effort!

Green Sanctuary Committee collects all types of aluminum cans - beverage, cat food, baby food - at the church and takes them to Wyoming Salvage for recycling. The proceeds are donated to Habitat for Humanity, and we have donated several hundred dollars to this organization through our recycling program. Although the city of Cheyenne collects aluminum cans in the blue bins and residential bins, we feel that our efforts leave a smaller environmental footprint and benefit two local businesses, Habitat for Humanity and Wyoming Salvage.

Please continue to bring your cans to the recycling corner in the social hall. It is very important that no steel is mixed with the aluminum cans because we are paid by weight. Recently a number of steel cans were rejected after we had been paid. This cuts down on the profits for Wyoming Salvage. A magnet will not stick to aluminum. Thank you for supporting this project. For more information, please contact Ilse at 638-4554.
